Montana Ale Works of Bozeman is the winner of the 2018 Montana Family Business the year in the medium business category (between 30 to 50 employees), presented by the Montana State University Jake Jabs College of Business and Entrepreneurship State Farm Insurance Family Business Day.
Montana Ale Works is a popular upscale grill and bar that serves up “artfully-crafted” comfort food, featuring locally-sourced produce, meats and cheeses in one of Bozeman’s most iconic landmarks, the former Northern Pacific Railroad freight warehouse.
Three of the five owners of Montana Ale Works, Mark Tache, Christin Cooper-Tache and Peter Hendrickson first joined forces at Mackenzie River Pizza Co. in 1994. Mark and Christin were part of the original ownership of Mackenzie which they sold in 2008 in order to focus their efforts on Ale Works, which they started in 2000.
Mackenzie River Pizza today is a successful pizza chain with 27 locations throughout west and mid-west.
Peter Hendricks came on board at Montana Ale Works as a general manager and eventually became a partner.
In October of 2005, Roth Jordan joined the team as the executive chef. Roth revamped the menu and recipes to make sure most foods were made in-house. He steered purchasing relationship to include more local purveyors, and options. In 2008, Roth joined the ownership family and is now the corporate chef.
In 2006, Sean Faris, also a former Mackenzie River Pizza co. manager, joined the Ale Works management as the assistant general manager, and in 2015 Sean also became a partner, as well as assuming the role of general manager.
The family at Montana Ale Works is not a traditional family, say the owners. But “we are a family none- the –less.” “We are comprised of passionate, go-getting visionaries, who enjoy the energetic, fast pace environment of the restaurant world and love being a part of the Downtown Bozeman community.”
